Ibrahim El Batout is considered to be one of Egypt's pioneers in independent cinema, bringing forth a new understanding to feature films. He has introduced what is now known as zero-budget films and has made many feature length and short documentaries. His fame erupted with Ithaki in 2005, a feature film that portrayed his personal experience covering events of wars in Europe, Russia among many other locations.
Ibrahim El-Batout, who was born on the 20th of September, 1963 in Port said, is a graduate of the American University in Cairo in 1985, majoring in Physics. El Batout's infatuation with the camera started in an agency that provides facilities for foreign TV-stations. There, he worked as a sound engineer. Shortly after, El Batout began to experiment with filmmaking and learned about the skills required of cameramen, editors and directors.
Since 87, he has worked as a director, producer and cameraman in many International TV channels, started in a British television station called TV-Am. He has also directed numerous documentaries for international TV channels, such as ZDF (Germany), TBS (Japan) and ARTE (France).
El Batout has received numerous international awards for his documentary work, such as : Baghdad 2004, Mass Graves in Iraq 2003, Drugs Addiction in Kuwait 2002, Pilgrimage to Mecca 2001, Three German Women 2001, Naguib Mahfouz 1999, War Beginning in Kosovo 1998, Slavery in Sudan, Afghan war against Mazar Sherif 1996.
In 2004, El Batout stepped into the world of fiction to make the long feature films with no budget, His first production was Ithaki in 2005, which received the Best Film Award at the Liqa'a El Soora Festival which was held at the French Centre in Cairo. He also worked with director Nadia Kamel on her documentary Salata Balady. In 2009, Ibrahim El Batout introduced his most important feature film to date; Ein shams. This acclaimed production took part in more than 45 film festivals around the world, including those held in London, Dubai, Sydney, Carthage and Taormina where he was awarded the Golden Tauro Best Film Award. He also received the award for Best Film at the Rotterdam Arab Film Festival, as well as the award for Best Film at the San Francisco Arab Film Festival.
After taking the Grand Prize for the best film in Al Doha Tribeca Film Festival, Ibrahim El Batout went with his film to the 40th Rotterdam International Film Festival, held between January 26th to February 6th. The film participated in the official competition and was praised by the audiences for its high technical standards.
HAWI then participated in the 29th Fajr Film Festival in the Iranian capital, Tehran, which was held between the 5th to the 15th of February this year. Lately, Hawi, participated in the Mediterranean Films sector in the 32nd Valencia International Film Festival, which was held between the 7th to the 14th of April
